Final Stats

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Utah State's gymnastics team concluded the 2018 season by placing third at the MRGC Championships with a season-high road score of 195.825 on Saturday night in front of 2,706 fans at the America First Event Center.

No. 15 Boise State captured its fourth consecutive MRGC title by placing first with a 196.875, while No. 20 BYU took second with a 196.000. Southern Utah, the host institution, finished fourth with a 195.575.

Going into the meet, Utah State (9-11) was one of two teams, along with Iowa, vying for the final NCAA Regional Championships spot. The Hawkeyes earned it with a 196.400 at the Big Ten Championships, which bumped their Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) to 195.775. The Aggies ended the season ranked 37th - the top 36 teams advance to regionals - with a 195.685 RQS.

"We had a great meet tonight, but unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough to get us where we wanted to be," said first-year USU head coach Amy Smith. "We just got Jazmyn (Estrella) back for the last three meets, and unfortunately, she injured herself during warmups tonight and we didn't have her for vault and bars, which was a big hit for us."

Junior Madison Ward and sophomore McKinley Pavicic both earned first-team all-conference accolades by tying for first on floor (9.900) and beam (9.900), respectively. Ward was one of six gymnasts to notch a 9.900 on floor.

"I'm extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to compete with my team tonight in the conference championship," Pavicic said. "The energy of our team was great throughout the entire night. The drive and passion this team brings motivates me every day, which played a huge part of my performance on beam tonight. I had set a goal earlier in the season of winning a beam title at conference and I couldn't be happier that I was able to turn that goal into a reality tonight."

Ward and freshman Mikaela Meyer both earned first-team all-MRGC on vault as they tied for third with matching 9.850s.

"We ended the meet well on beam and floor, so I was really proud of the team for that," Ward said. "It was kind of cool because I didn't train floor or vault, or any landings this week, to save my ankles, so that was kind of funny to get first on floor."

The final Aggie to earn all-MRGC accolades on Saturday was junior Emily Briones, who was a second-team honoree on beam as she placed sixth with a 9.825. At the conclusion of the meet, Autumn DeHarde was tabbed the MRGC Freshman of the Year.

"It means so much," DeHarde said. "In and outside of the gym, I've worked hard all year, so seeing that pay off feels really good. This year has been so fun, and I am so excited for next year."

Utah State opened the meet on vault with a 48.925, highlighted by Meyer and Ward. Moving to bars in the second rotation, the Aggies recorded a 48.600. Sophomores MaKayla Bullitt and Brittany Jeppesen were the team's top finishers on the event as the duo tied for 13th with a pair of 9.775s.

Utah State closed out the meet strong in the final two rotations. On beam, Pavicic and Briones led the Aggies to their 49.125 with their 9.900 and 9.825, respectively. However, DeHarde, sophomore Elle Golison and freshmen Leighton Varnadore and Taylor Dittmar finished in an eight-way tie for seventh at 9.800.

The Aggies concluded the meet with a 49.175 on floor. DeHarde and freshman Faith Leary tied for 10th with 9.850s.

"Everybody is returning next year, so I am really excited about the future of this program," Smith said. "If we can take a silver lining out of this and use this as fuel for next year, we're going to be really dangerous, and we're going to be a really strong team. I'm really looking forward to that. Once again, I am proud of what they have done this year, and I am proud of the character and the resilience of this team. This team, from the get-go, has really done everything that I've asked them to do wholeheartedly, and as a first-year head coach, I couldn't ask for more."

While the team will not be going to regionals, Utah State will have individual qualifiers, who will be officially announced in the coming days.

"I know that we will continue to grow as a team and use tonight to light a fire for next year," Pavicic said. "Utah State is going to be dangerous next season. We are an extremely consistent team with so much potential. Our future is so bright and I could not be more proud to be a part of what's to come. Amy and her staff have made such an impact on this team and I am thankful for the consistent support they give no matter what."
