LOGAN, Utah -
Nevada 3, Utah State 2 (8)
Utah State softball opened its series against Nevada on Thursday, losing to the Wolf Pack, 3-2, in eight innings. Freshman pitcher Delaney Hull pitched the complete game, as she tallied four strikeouts and did not allow any walks. The Aggies had just two hits in the game, each coming from a different player. With the loss, Utah State falls to 12-17 overall and 2-5 in Mountain West play. Nevada improves to 15-15 on the year and 4-3 in league action. The first batters to reach base on either side came via hit by a pitch. The Wolf Pack earned the first hit of the day in the top of the second, on a single to deep right-center, which brought in the first run and gave Nevada the early lead. The Aggies had a walk in the bottom of that inning, but both teams were retired in order in the third. Nevada extended its lead in the top of the fourth. The first runner reached base on an error, but the Aggies turned a double play on the next at-bat to make up for the play. However, the Wolf Pack hit a single, followed by a double, putting the first run on the board. The Aggies were able to answer in the bottom of the inning, though, as sophomore outfielder/first baseman Riley Plogger led off with a home run to center field. Utah State loaded the bases in the latter part of the frame, but left all three runners stranded. After retiring the Wolf Pack batters in order in the top of the fifth, Utah State tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman outfielder Leah Molina drew a walk to lead things off, then stole second. Senior catcher Brina Buttacavoli singled through the right side, brining Molina home and evening the score at 2-all. The teams battled through the remaining innings of regulation, with neither side able to score. In the top of the eighth, Nevada opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After a flyball moved a runner to third, she eventually scored on a fielder's choice. The Aggies went down in order in their half of the inning, ending the game. In all, Nevada had eight hits to Utah State's two. The Aggies also had an error in the game.
The series between the Aggies and the Wolf Pack will continue on Friday, March 30, at 3 p.m. The weekend will conclude with a noon contest on Saturday, March 31.
