Utah State softball continued its weekend of play at Fresno State Saturday, falling to the Bulldogs, 4-3.

Freshman Delaney Hull pitched the complete game Saturday, striking out two batters and walking one. Senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke led the Aggie offense, as she batted 2-for-4 on the day.

With the loss, Utah State falls to 13-21 overall, including a 3-8 Mountain West record. Fresno State improves to 23-15 on the year and 6-2 in conference action.

Utah State struck early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. With two outs on the board, freshman outfielder Riley Plogger reached first on a Fresno State error. Senior catcher Brina Buttacavoli followed with a walk, before junior first baseman Bailee Trapp blasted a home run to left center.

Fresno State answered with one run in the bottom of the inning, piecing a run together on a USU error, a single and a sac fly. The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the second. After leading off the inning with a single, a triple down the right field line brought a run in and put Fresno State within one. The Aggie defense recorded back-to-back outs then, avoiding further damage.

Utah State loaded the bases in the top of the third, all before any outs were recorded. After a pitching change, however, Fresno State put together three-straight outs to leave all three Aggie runners stranded.

After a couple of uneventful innings, Fresno State tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. The Bulldogs led-off with a triple, where the runner was then able to score when the ball was overthrown. In the bottom of the sixth, Fresno State then took the lead. After one out, the Bulldogs hit a single and a double to quickly put two runners in scoring position. A groundout to second was enough for the team to bring a run in and take the 4-3 lead.

Utah State was able to get one last single out of Clarke, but the Aggies were otherwise retired in the top of the seventh, ending the game.

The Bulldogs out-hit the Aggies, 8-5. Utah State made two errors on the day, while Fresno State had one.

The Aggies and Bulldogs will conclude their series on Sunday, April 8, at noon (MT).
