LOGAN, Utah – Utah State soccer battled in its Mountain West opener Friday, but fell to UNLV on a last-second heartbreaker to fall, 1-0.

Utah State falls to 1-7-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in conference play, while UNLV improves to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Mountain West action. 

The two defenses battled for the majority of the match, with each looking for the prime scoring opportunity. UNLV held much of the control throughout the first half, but the Aggies switched play around in the second half, keeping the ball in their attacking third. The Rebels tried to make the most of setpieces, finishing the game with 14 corner kicks, but the Utah State defense thwarted every opportunity. 

Play came down to the final seconds of regulation, when the Rebels were able to earn a free kick about 30 yards out. The kick found the penalty box and several members of the UNLV offense, where the ball eventually got past the Aggies to score the game-winner with 24 seconds to play. 

On the day, UNLV tallied 17 shots to Utah State's eight, including a 7-4 on-goal advantage. Senior Grace McGuire minded the net for the Aggies, gathering six saves in the contest.

The Aggies return to action at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field on Sunday, Sept. 23, when they host Nevada in a 1 p.m. match.
