USU WBB NOTES - USU Women's Basketball Takes On San José State and Colorado State

Utah State women's basketball (8-7, 3-1 MW) continues Mountain West action this week as the Aggies host San José State (1-13, 0-3 MW) on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m., for USU's annual Elementary Day game, and then take on Colorado State (7-8, 1-3 MW) on the road on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. 

BEST PROGRAM START IN MOUNTAIN WEST PLAY
Utah State is off to its best start in conference action (3-1) since joing the Mountain West. The last time the Aggies started 3-1 in conference play was in the 2012-13 season with the WAC, when USU finished 14-4 in league play. 

SHUTTING DOWN THE THREE
Utah State shut down Wyoming, which at the time was leading the nation in 3-point field goal percentage, behind the arc in the 50-42 victory (Jan. 12). Wyoming entered the game shooting 43.7 percent (111-of-254) from long range. The Aggies held the Cowgirls to a season-low 19.0 percent (4-of-21) from 3-point range, and also held Wyoming to a season low from the field as the Cowgirls shot 32.7 percent (16-of-49) from the floor for a season-low 42 points.

SHUTTING DOWN THE THREE - PART II
Utah State ranks third in the conference and 29th in the nation in 3-point field goal defense. Against the Aggies, opponents are shooting 26.8 percent (73-of-272) from behind the arc. The Aggies have held 10 of their opponents to under 30 percent from behind the arc, nine to 25 percent or under and four to 20 percent or lower. 

DOUBLES FOR DAYS
Junior guard/forward Shannon Dufficy has recorded 21 double-doubles during her career at Utah State. Ashlee Brown holds the most double-doubles since women's basketball was reinstated in 2003 with 22. 

DOUBLES FOR DAYS - PART II
Dufficy has posted nine double-doubles this season to rank first in the Mountain West and 12th in the nation. Dufficy has recorded five-straight double-doubles, including in all four Mountain West games. She is currently averaging a double-double at 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

CLEANING UP ON THE GLASS
Dufficy has pulled down at least five rebounds in all but one game this season, and has had nine games collecting double-digit boards. Dufficy averages 10.2 rebounds per game to rank first in the Mountain West and 35th in the nation. Dufficy has totaled 153 rebounds this season to rank first in the conference and 42nd in the nation.

PROTECTING THE RIM
Utah State ranks second in the Mountain West and 46th in the nation in blocks per game with an average of 4.5. The Aggies lead the conference in league play, averaging 7.5 per game. USU has had 10 games where at least one player has recorded multiple blocks. Two Aggies have blocked five or more shots in a game as junior guard/forward Shannon Dufficy had a career-high six blocks against Nevada (Jan. 2) and senior center Deja Mason had five against BYU (Nov. 20). 

CONVERTING AT THE CHARITY STRIPE IN THE FINAL MINUTE
Junior guard Olivia West was 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 15 seconds of the Aggies' 79-76 double-overtime victory against Nevada (Jan. 2). West then converted both her free throws in the final minute at Air Force (Jan. 5). Overall, USU shoots 76.2 percent (32-of-42) at the charity stripe during the final minute of the game, led by West (14-of-18) and junior guard/forward Shannon Dufficy (11-of-12).

SHARING IS CARING
Utah State is fourth in the Mountain West in assists per game with an average of 15.3. The Aggies have dished out more assists than their opponents in 11 of their 15 games this season. Junior guard Eliza West leads the team with a total of 78 dimes, which ranks 45th in the nation, and ranks third in the league and 43rd in the nation in assists per game, averaging 5.2 per game.

I'LL TAKE THAT
Utah State has had at least one player record multiple steals in 13 of its 15 games this season. Junior guard/forward Shannon Dufficy leads the team with 32 thefts on the season. Dufficy stole the ball a career-high six times against Long Beach State (Dec. 22), and is third in the Mountain West in steals per game with an average of 2.1.
