LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior linebacker
David Woodward has been named the Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the organization.
Earlier this week, Woodward was tabbed the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week and the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week following his performance in the Aggies' 34-24 Homecoming victory over Colorado State last Saturday night on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium.
Against the Rams, Woodward had a game-best 14 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery that he returned eight yards for a touchdown. Overall, it was his third double-digit tackle outing of the season and the 12th of his career. He has now forced four fumbles this season and six in his career.
With the Aggies nursing a 27-24 lead, Colorado State got the ball back on its own 4-yard line with 9:42 to go in the game following a punt. On the first play of the drive, Rams running back Marvin Kinsey Jr. gained four yards before being stood up at the 8, where Woodward stripped the ball and returned it for his second-career touchdown.
On the season, the 6-foot-2, 235-pound native of Olympia, Wash., leads the nation in forced fumbles with four (1.0 pg), is second in the MW and third in the nation in tackles (13.8 pg), and second in the MW and 25th in the nation in fumbles recovered with one (0.25 pg).
Woodward and the Aggies (3-1, 2-0 MW) will step out of conference play this weekend when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face fifth-ranked LSU (4-0, 1-0 SEC) on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Tiger Stadium. The game, which will be televised nationally on the SEC Network (Xfinity 286, Dish Network 404 DirecTV 661), will kick off at 10 a.m. (MT).
Utah State will receive $1,000 for its general scholarship fund in recognition of Woodward's performance.
The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation sponsors the Lott IMPACT Trophy and has donated more than $1.5 million to universities and charities throughout the country.
