LOGAN, Utah – In a dramatic five-set match, Utah State volleyball defeated San José State, 3-2, at home Thursday night.
The match was tight from the beginning, as the Spartans took the first two sets, 25-23 and 28-26. The Aggies came back to win the final three sets though, posting 25-21, 26-24 and 15-13 victories. USU had the biggest lead s of the night, up six at one point in the first set and five in the second, forcing SJSU to come from behind to take the first two wins.
Utah State's biggest strength came on the block Thursday, as the team recorded 22 total blocks. The 40 block assists set the program record for team block assists in a five-set match, surpassing the previous best of 39 in 1987. The Aggies were led by sophomore middle blocker
Autumn Spafford who finished the night with two block solos and 10 block assists. Three other Aggies had career-high numbers in blocks, as sophomore middle
Corinne Larsen added 10, senior opposite side hitter
Izzie Belnap had seven, and sophomore outside hitter
Whitney Solosabal tallied five.
The Aggies were able to take advantage of San José State mistakes throughout the contest. The Spartans had 77 kills to Utah State's 44, but racked up 56 attack errors to the Aggies' 19. Solosabal led the USU attack, as she tied her career high with 16 kills and hit .350 (16-2-40) on the night.
In all, Utah State hit .145 (44-19-173) to San José State's .095 (77-56-221).
The Aggies stay home to close out the week, as they host Nevada (12-3, 2-1 MW) on Saturday, Oct. 5, at noon.
