BATON ROUGE, La. – Utah State stepped out of Mountain West play and into SEC country, losing 42-6 to No. 5 LSU on a sultry Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Senior placekicker
Dominik Eberle provided the lone points for the Aggies (3-2, 2-0 MW), converting on field goals of 30 and 47 yards, respectively, in the first half.
LSU's defense gave Utah State quarterback
Jordan Love and the Aggies fits all afternoon. The junior signal caller was just 15-for-30 for 130 yards and three interceptions. Junior wide receiver
Jordan Nathan was Love's top target, hauling in four passes for 51 yards.
The Aggies, who were 1-for-12 on third downs, finished with just 159 yards of total offense and 10 first downs.
Joe Burrow was 27-of-38 for 344 yards and five touchdowns for the Tigers (5-0, 1-0 SEC), who racked up 601 yards of total offense – 353 through the air and 248 on the ground. Justin Jefferson caught nine passes for 155 yards and two TDs, while Thaddeus Moss, Derrick Dillon and Ja'Marr Chase caught one TD apiece.
Junior linebackers
David Woodward and
Kevin Meitzenheimer led the Aggies' defensive effort with 16 and 14 tackles, apiece. Meitzenheimer also forced two fumbles. Junior safety
Troy Lefeged Jr. added nine stops for Utah State, which fell to 0-3 all-time against LSU.
Utah State trailed 21-6 at the break, but it could have been much closer than that. Eberle's first field goal came after senior cornerback
Cameron Haney intercepted a pass by Burrow and returned it to the Tigers' 7-yard line. However, the Aggies lost six yards on the drive, settling for Eberle's 30-yarder that made it 7-3 for LSU.
With Utah State trailing 14-6 and driving in the second quarter, Love was intercepted by LSU's Derek Stingley at the Tigers' 1-yard line. Burrow proceeded to march the hosts 99 yards in 13 plays, capped by a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase to give the Tigers their halftime lead.
