LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball opened the final week of the 2019 season in a four-set home loss to San Diego State Thursday.
The Aztecs won the first two sets, 25-18 and 29-17, before the Aggies came back to take the third, 25-17. SDSU then closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Utah State scored first in each set Thursday. In all, there were 11 lead changes and 24 ties throughout the night. The extra-points second set was the highest scoring for the Aggies in conference play this season. The Aggies reached set point twice in the final minutes before the Aztecs came back to take the win. The two teams traded points and runs fairly evenly through the match, though the Aggies led from start to finish in the third set.
The Aggies were led by junior opposite side hitter
Bailey Downing, who recorded her first-career double-double. She finished the match with a career-high 13 blocks (5-8), and added 11 kills. Sophomore middle blocker
Corinne Larsen also recorded 11 kills, while sophomore middle
Kelee Call hit a team-high .308 (6-2-13). Additionally, Call had a career-high 10 blocks, while Utah State had 21 blocks overall. The Aggies had six service aces against the Aztecs, matching the most against a Mountain West opponent this season.
In all, the teams hit an even .174 in the match, as Utah State went 47-21-149 and the Aztecs hit 62-35-155.
Utah State will wrap up the 2019 season on Saturday, Nov. 23, when it hosts Fresno State at 1 p.m. The Aggies will honor their three seniors prior to the match.
