LOGAN, Utah - No. 17/19 Utah State men's basketball (2-0) recorded an 89-34 victory over in-state foe Weber State (0-1) on Friday night in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The 55-point win tied for the largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent in Utah State history.
Sophomore forward
Justin Bean led the Aggies with a career-high 18 points, including 15 in the first half, and flirted with a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. Junior guard
Abel Porter recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 assists.
Three other Aggies scored in double figures as senior guard
Sam Merrill had 14 points, senior guard
Diogo Brito had 12 and sophomore guard
Brock Miller had 11.
Weber State led the Aggies, 6-4, with 17:29 left in the first half, but USU then outscored the Wildcats 44-7 over the rest of the half to take a 48-13 lead at the break. The 13 points marked the fewest points allowed in a half by the Aggies since 2014, when San José State scored 12.
Weber State was led by sophomore forward Donatas Kupsas with 10 points.
Utah State finished the night shooting 55.2 percent (37-of-67) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from behind the 3-point and 90.0 percent (9-of-10) at the free throw line. Weber State shot 21.7 percent (10-of-46) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from behind the arc and 45.0 percent (9-of-20) at the free throw line.
Utah State continues its five-game homestand in its next contest, hosting Denver (0-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m., inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
