LOGAN, Utah – Utah State had 10 football players earn various all-Mountain West accolades, including placekicker
Dominik Eberle, kick returner
Savon Scarver and linebacker
David Woodward, who all garnered first-team honors, as the league office announced its postseason awards Wednesday.
In all, Utah State had four offensive, four defensive and two special team players recognized for a total of 10 all-conference awards, to rank as the fifth-most in the league.
Boise State led the Mountain West with 19 all-conference honorees, followed by Air Force (14), San Diego State (14), Hawai'i (11), Utah State (10), Wyoming (8), San José State (7), Colorado State (6), Fresno State (6), Nevada (6), UNLV (6) and New Mexico (5).
Along with Eberle, Scarver and Woodward's first-team honors, Utah State had two players earn second-team all-Mountain West accolades in senior defensive end
Tipa Galeai and senior graduate transfer wide receiver
Siaosi Mariner, while five Aggies garnered honorable mention honors in senior running back
Gerold Bright, senior graduate transfer tight end
Caleb Repp, senior defensive tackle
Christopher Unga, junior safety
Shaq Bond and junior quarterback
Jordan Love.
Six of the 10 Aggies honored by the Mountain West are multiple recipients of postseason recognition from the conference, highlighted by Eberle, who earned all-MW honors for the third time in his career as he was also named to the first team as a sophomore in 2017, along with being named to the honorable mention team last year. Scarver has earned first-team honors in each of the past two seasons, while Galeai and Unga have been named to the second- and honorable mention teams in each of the last two seasons, respectively. Furthermore, Love and Woodward were both named to the second team a season ago.
For Eberle and Scarver, they become the 37th and 38th Aggies in school history to be a multiple first-team all-conference selection, including the first since Kyler Fackrell and Nick Vigil following the 2015 campaign.
San José State quarterback Josh Love was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, while Boise State defensive end Curtis Weaver was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year. Boise State's Avery Williams was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year and the Broncos' George Holani earned Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors. The Mountain West Coach of the Year Award went to Hawaii's Nick Rolovich.
Eberle, a 6-2, 190-pound senior placekicker from Nuremberg, Germany (Redondo Union (CA) HS), leads the Mountain West and ranks 37th in the nation in scoring with 97 points (8.1 ppg). He is also third in the MW and 15th in the nation in field goal percentage (.864), third in the MW and 18th in the nation in field goals made per game (1.58) and eighth in the MW in points responsible for per game (8.1). Eberle is 19-of-22 on field goal attempts this season, including 5-of-5 from 20-29 yards, 8-of-8 from 30-39 yards, 6-of-8 from 40-49 yards and 0-of-1 from 50-plus. He is also a perfect 40-of-40 on extra points and has kicked off 67 times for 4,007 yards (59.8 ypk) with 36 touchbacks.
The 2017 Lou Groza Award finalist has been named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week three times this year, which is tied for the most in the conference. Two of those awards came after road wins at San Diego State and at Fresno State, as Utah State became the first MW team to ever win road games at those two institutions in the same year.
Scarver, a 5-11, 180-pound junior kick returner from Las Vegas, Nev. (Centennial HS), is first in the Mountain West and second nationally in kickoff returns for touchdown with two (0.18 pg), and is first in the MW and sixth in the nation in kickoff return yards (29.3 ypr). On the season, he has returned 19 kickoffs for 557 yards, and has caught 22 passes for 259 yards (11.8 ypc), including a long of 48.
Scarver's two kickoff returns for touchdown came in back-to-back Mountain West home games against Colorado State and Nevada, returning each 100 yards.
Despite missing the last five games of the season due to injury, Woodward, a 6-2, 235-pound junior linebacker from Olympia, Wash. (Olympia HS), leads the Aggies with 93 tackles, including 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, to go along with a team-best four forced fumbles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery he returned eight yards for a touchdown.
Woodward was named the Chuck Bednarik National Player of the Week after he recorded a career-high 24 tackles and a career-high two forced fumbles, while tying his career high with 3.5 tackles for loss, to go along with 1.0 sacks, in the season opener at Wake Forest. Those 24 stops against the Demon Deacons are the most in the nation this year. He was also named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after recording 14 tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and defensive touchdown in a 34-23 win against Colorado State. Woodward also posted double-digit tackles in six of the seven games he played in this season.
Galeai, a 6-5, 235-pound senior defensive end from Euless, Texas (Trinity HS/TCU), started all 11 games he played in this year and ranks sixth in the Mountain West in sacks with a team-leading five (0.45 pg) on the year. He also has 8.5 tackles for loss and seven quarterback hurries, both of which lead the team. Galeai had 1.0 sacks and a career-high 3.0 tackles for loss in a road win at San Diego State and added a career-high-tying 2.0 sacks in a road win at New Mexico.
Mariner, a 6-2, 195-pound senior graduate transfer wide receiver from Tustin, Calif. (Tustin HS/Utah), has started all 12 games this year ranks third in the Mountain West and 33rd in the nation in receiving touchdowns with eight (0.67 pg), fourth in the MW and 48th in the nation in receiving yards (72.8 ypg), ninth in the MW and 79th in the nation in receptions (4.7 pg), and 10th in the MW and 92nd in the nation in yards per reception (15.6). He leads the Aggies in receptions (56), receiving yards (874) and receiving touchdowns (8).
Mariner's 80-yard touchdown reception against Wyoming is tied for the third-longest catch in the Mountain West this season, while his trio of 100-yard receiving games is tied for the fifth-most in the league. He hauled in a career-high 11 catches for 103 yards and a career-best two touchdowns at Fresno State, which is tied for the third-most in the conference for a single game this season and had four catches for a season-high 123 yards against Wyoming.
Bright, a 5-10, 190-pound senior running back from Pensacola, Fla. (Escambia HS), started 10 of the 12 games he played in this season and is seventh in the Mountain West and 76th in the nation in rushing touchdowns with eight (0.7 pg), seventh in the MW and 81st in the nation in yards per carry (5.1), eighth in the MW and 89th in the nation in rushing yards (68.9 ypg), ninth in the MW and 100th in the nation in total touchdowns with nine (0.75 ypg), and ninth in the MW in all-purpose yards (92.8 ypg).
Bright has carried the ball 161 times for 827 yards and eight touchdowns on the season, while catching 31 passes for 207 yards (6.7 ypr) and one touchdown. Overall, he has three 100-yard rushing games this year, including a career-high 179 yards on a career-high 36 carries against Colorado State. He also has at least one rushing touchdown in seven games this season.
Repp, a 6-5, 225-pound senior graduate transfer tight end from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. (Los Osos HS/Utah), started six of the 12 games he played in this season. On the season, Repp is second in the Mountain West among all tight ends with his 36 receptions and 455 receiving yards, while his four touchdown catches are tied for first among all tight ends in the conference. Overall, he is second on the team in receiving touchdowns, tied for third in receptions and fourth in receiving yards.
Unga, a 6-foot, 295-pound senior nose guard from Rochester, Calif. (Rancho Cucamonga HS), started nine of the 12 games he played in this year and ranks first on the team among defensive tackles with 43 tackles, which includes 2.0 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. On the season, he recorded at least five tackles in four of his last six games and notched multiple tackles in 11 games overall.
Bond, a 5-10, 195-pound junior safety from Decatur, Ill. (MacArthur HS/Southwestern JC), started all 12 games this year and is tied for eighth in the Mountain West and tied for 61st in the nation with three interceptions (0.25 pg). On the season, Bond is first on the team with three interceptions, third with eight passes defended and fourth with his 75 tackles. He also has 3.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble on the season. His best game of the year was against Air Force as he recorded a career-high 12 tackles, and he added eight tackles and an interception return for a touchdown at San Diego State.
Love, a 6-4, 225-pound junior quarterback from Bakersfield, Calif. (Liberty HS), started all 12 games this year and is third in the Mountain West and 26th in the nation in passing yards (257.1 ypg), third in the MW and 30th in the nation in total offense (270.3 ypg), fourth in the MW and 17th in the nation in completions (21.9 pg), fourth in the MW and 55th in the nation in passing touchdowns with 17 (1.42 pg), fifth in the MW and 81st in the nation in passing efficiency (125.9), fifth in the MW and 99th in the nation in points responsible for (8.5 pg), sixth in the MW and 76th in the nation in yards per pass attempt (7.11), and seventh in the MW and 62nd in the nation in completion percentage (.606).
On the season, Love is 263-of-434 (.606) passing for 3,085 yards (257.1 ypg) with 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. In the single-season record books, he currently ranks third all-time in school history in completions, fifth in both passing attempts and total offense (3,244 yards), seventh in passing yards and eighth in completion percentage.
Love began the season by completing a career-high 33-of-48 (.688) passes for 416 yards with three touchdowns at Wake Forest, as those 33 completions are the second-most in school history. He was also 30-of-39 (.769) passing for 388 yards with two touchdowns at Fresno State and 30-of-47 (.638) passing for 293 yards at San Diego State. Overall, Love has thrown for over 380 yards three times this season and has had at least two touchdown passes in five games.
Utah State is 7-5 on the season and finished in third place in the Mountain Division of the Mountain West with a 6-2 league record. Overall, USU has won at least seven games six times in the past nine years and 26 times in school history. This season also marked the fourth time in its seven years in the league that it has won at least six league games joining the 2013 (7-1), 2014 (6-2) and 2018 (7-1) teams. Overall, it is just the sixth time in school history that USU has won six conference games, joining the 1936 (6-0), 2012 (6-0), 2013 (7-1), 2014 (6-2) and 2018 (7-1) teams.
Utah State, which is bowl eligible for the eighth time in the past nine seasons and will play in its 14th bowl game in school history this year, will learn its postseason destination on Sunday, Dec. 8.
