SAN JOSE, Calif. - Utah State men's basketball (8-1, 1-0 MW) opened its Mountain West slate with a 71-59 victory at San Jose State (3-6, 0-1 MW) on Wednesday night. Sophomore forward
Justin Bean led the Aggies with game highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds, marking his fourth consecutive double-double on the year.
Bean was followed in double figures by senior guard
Sam Merrill with 14 points, junior forward
Alphonso Anderson with 12 points and senior guard
Diogo Brito with 10 points. The Spartans were led by Seneca Knight with 17 points, the lone double-digit scorer for SJSU.
Utah State outrebounded San Jose State, 42-34, and also won the battle inside, outscoring the Spartans 46-22 inside the paint. The Aggies shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) and a season-low 55.0 percent (11-of-20) at the free throw line, while SJSU shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from behind the 3-point line and 60.0 percent (9-of-15) at the free throw line.
Utah State returns to the court on Saturday, hosting Fresno State in its Mountain West home opener at 4 p.m.
