TEMPE, Ariz. – Utah State softball wrapped up its weekend at the Littlewood Classic, falling to tournament host No. 14 Arizona State, 10-2, in six innings.
Junior outfielder
Riley Plogger continued her strong weekend, as she was a team-best 2-for-3 at the plate, while scoring one of the team's runs against the Sun Devils.
Utah State ends the weekend with a 3-7 overall record.
The game started out as a defensive battle, as the Aggies retired six-straight batters through the first two innings, while getting one runner on through a walk. Arizona State opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third, combining three hits and a fielder's choice to plate two runs. The Sun Devils' surge continued in the fourth inning, when two home runs brought another five runs home and ASU took a 7-0 lead.
Utah State got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Plogger led off with a single and was able to take second on a wild pitch. A single from freshman shortstop
Lexi Orozco followed, bringing Plogger home. With the bases loaded after a walk and a single, a sac fly from senior catcher
Bailey Lewis allowed Orozco to score. Unfortunately for the Aggies, Arizona State plated three more runs in the bottom of the inning, taking the run-rule victory.
Overall, Utah State had four hits to Arizona State's 10. Sophomore
Delaney Hull and freshman
Kapri Toone split time in the circle for the Aggies, striking out three batters and walking two.
