OGDEN, Utah – Utah State softball opened its week of competition with a dominant road win at Weber State Wednesday, as the Aggies topped the Wildcats, 9-0, in five innings.
The Aggie offense was led by senior first baseman Bailee Trapp, who was a perfect 2-for-2, while junior outfielder Riley Plogger went 2-for-3 on the day. Utah State hit two home runs in the game, one from Trapp, and the second from redshirt freshman outfielder Bri Lerma. Additionally, the Aggies drew six walks in the game.
With the shutout win, Utah State improves to 10-13 on the season, while Weber State falls to 7-17 overall.
USU didn't waste any time Wednesday, as Plogger led off with a double. She moved to third on a ground out and was then able to score on a single from Trapp. Another single from freshman shortstop Lexi Orozco brought freshman second baseman Kenzie Bolin home, who had walked earlier in the inning. Weber State also had a lead-off hit in the bottom of the inning, but three strikeouts from Aggie ace Delaney Hull ended the inning.
Defenses controlled the second inning, as the USU side was retired. Hull added another two strikeouts in the home half of the inning, while walking another batter. Junior catcher Allanah Alvarado and Orozco were able to make the final out though, catching the runner stealing.
The Aggies went on to score in the next three innings, quickly building up their lead. Bolin drew her second walk of the day in the third, providing a two-run opportunity for Trapp's home run to center field. USU's biggest inning came in the fourth, as the team worked through the batting order. After a walk and a single, a Weber State error put runners on second and third, with another walk loading the bases. Back-to-back singles then brought in a pair of runs, while a third scored on a groundout, giving the Aggies a 7-0 lead.
Utah State reached its run-rule total in the top of the fifth, when Lerma hit the first home run of her career, also scoring Alvarado who had walked. Weber State added its second hit of the game in the bottom of the inning, but a final strikeout from Hull ended the game.
In all, Utah State tallied nine hits to Weber State's two, while the Wildcats had one error. Hull pitched her sixth complete game of the season en route to her first shutout. She finished the game with six strikeouts and walked two batters.
