LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head men's basketball coach
Craig Smith has been named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 17 Coach of the Year. Smith is one of 25 coaches across the nation included on the list, with District 17 made up of coaches from the Mountain West.
Smith led the Aggies to both the regular season and Mountain West Tournament championship, finishing the year with an overall mark of 28-6. Utah State's 28 wins are the third-most in school history and the most by a first-year head coach in USU history. Smith also recorded the most wins by any first-year head coach in the nation this season.
In the Mountain West schedule alone, Smith led the Aggies to a 15-3 mark, which tied for the third-most league victories in school history and the most for Utah State since joining the conference in 2013-14.
Utah State is currently ranked No. 25 in the nation in both The Associated Press and USA Today Coaches poll, marking the first time the Aggies have been ranked since the 2010-11 season.
USU drew a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face the No. 9-seeded Washington Huskies in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, March 22, at 4:50 p.m. (MT). Fans can watch the game live on TNT with Brian Anderson providing play-by-play, Chris Webber as the analyst and Allie LaForce as the sideline reporter. The winner of the game will advance to face either No. 1 North Carolina or No. 16 Iona on Sunday, March 24.
