SAN JOSE, Calif. – Continuing its weekend against San José State, Utah State softball fell to the Spartans, 3-2, in a late-scoring game Saturday.
With the loss, USU falls to 13-27 overall and 4-15 in Mountain West play. SJSU improves to 31-15 on the year and 11-6 against conference opponents.
Utah State struck first in Saturday's game, bringing a run across in the top of the second. Sophomore third baseman Kennedy Hira doubled to left center, followed by a single from senior designated player Bailey Lewis. A sac fly from freshman catcher Gabriella Jimenez brought Hira home. The Aggies extended their lead in the fourth inning. After senior first baseman Bailee Trapp reached on a fielder's choice, another double from Hira doubled USU's score.
San José State rallied late in the game, coming back to take the series win. The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, connecting three hits to bring a run home. A pair of doubles and a sac fly gave SJSU two more runs and the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Aggies added two pinch-hit singles in the seventh inning, but were unable to bring the runners around, ending the game.
On the day, Utah State out-hit San José State, 8-7, but the Aggies had one error. Freshman Kapri Toone made the start in the circle for the Aggies, with sophomore Delaney Hull coming in in relief late in the game. Toone walked one batter and struck out another.
Utah State and San José State will wrap-up the series on Sunday, April 28, at noon (MT).
