Game Recap: Softball |
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Utah State softball wrapped up its weekend series against San José State Sunday, falling to the Spartans, 6-3.

Sophomore designated player Kennedy Hira powered the USU offense, earning two of the three team hits with a double and a home run.

With the loss, Utah State falls to 13-28 overall and 4-16 in Mountain West play. San José State improves to 32-15 on the year and 12-6 against conference opponents.

The Spartans took control of the game early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before the Aggies could get on the board. Utah State did not see a base runner until the top of the fourth inning, when junior outfielder Riley Plogger drew a lead-off walk. A fielder's choice followed, keeping a runner at first, while freshman second baseman Kenzie Bolin was also walked. Hira then ended the Spartans no-hitter bid with a three-run home run to center field, putting the Aggies within a run, 4-3. Senior catcher Bailey Lewis followed with a double, but was left on base.

After retiring the Aggies in order over the next two innings, San José State extended its lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Hira hit a lead-off double in the top of the seventh, but was unable to make it around the bases before the end of the game.

In all, San José State had 10 hits to Utah State's three, while the Aggies also had one error in the game. Sophomore pitcher Delaney Hull started the game for USU, throwing four innings before being relieved by freshman Kapri Toone

Utah State has its Mountain West bye this coming week, but will play a home-and-home series against Utah Valley. The teams will meet in Orem on Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m., then turn around to play in Logan on Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m.
