Game Recap: Softball |
LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball continued its weekend series against New Mexico Saturday, dropping game two to the Lobos, 6-3.

Utah State falls to 12-19 on the season, going 3-7 in Mountain West play. New Mexico improves to 11-27 overall and 2-9 against conference opponents with the win.

Utah State was first on the board Saturday, as the Aggies didn't waste any time getting the bats going. Junior outfielder Riley Plogger led off with a single, advancing to scoring position on a groundout. A double from senior catcher Bailey Lewis then brought Plogger home for the first run of the day. The Aggies then doubled their lead in the bottom of the second. After a walk and a double, another groundout allowed a run to cross the plate.

New Mexico's big inning came in the third, where it was able to take the lead away from USU. The Lobos loaded the bases with two outs on the board with two singles and a walk. A home run off the scoreboard cleared the bases, giving the Lobos the 4-2 lead.

The Aggies were retired in order through the next two innings, but were able to pull back within a run on a solo home run from Plogger in the bottom of the fifth. The Lobos weren't done though, as they combined three doubles and a walk to plate another two runs in the seventh inning. Utah State got two last runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but two deep fly balls were caught to end the game.

In all, New Mexico had nine hits to Utah State's seven, while the Aggies also had one error. Freshman pitcher Kapri Toone made the start for the Aggies, striking out a career-best eight batters in her six innings of work. Sophomore Delaney Hull came in in relief, adding another two strikeouts to give USU its highest strikeout count of the season.

Utah State and New Mexico will wrap up the series on Sunday, April 7, at noon.
