LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball picked up a series win over San Diego State Friday, as the Aggies defeated the Aztecs, 7-6.
With the win, Utah State moves to 17-29 on the season with a 6-16 Mountain West record. San Diego State falls to 24-26 overall and 11-12 in conference play.
The Utah State seniors continued their strong performances in the final week of their careers. Catcher
Bailey Lewis was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day, adding two RBIs and a walk. First baseman
Bailee Trapp went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run and batting in two. Outfielder
Mia Maher nearly doubled her previous career-best in putouts, finishing the game with seven in right field.
San Diego State got things going early, taking a 3-0 lead before the Aggies got to the plate. After two singles to start the game, a double brought the first two runs in. A fielder's choice made the second out of the inning, but an Aztec run scored on the play.
Luckily the Aggies were quick to respond, loading the bases before any outs were made. Sophomore outfielder
Stephanie Reed hit a lead-off single, while junior outfielder
Riley Plogger walked and freshman second baseman was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles from Trapp and Lewis brought two runs in and forced an SDSU pitching change. A two-run single from junior third baseman
Erin Kuba followed to give USU a 4-3 lead, before outs were made on the next three at-bats.
Utah State extended its lead in the bottom of the second. The inning started the same as the first, with a lead-off single from Reed and a walk from Plogger. A fielder's choice left runners on the corners, when Trapp singled. A throwing error from the Aztecs gave all runners extra bases, sending Reed and Bolin home.
San Diego State cut the Aggie lead to one with a two-run home run in the top of the third. After going down in order in the bottom of the third, USU added a run if it's own in the fourth, leading 7-5. Plogger opened the inning with a double, taking third on a fly ball and scoring on a single from Lewis.
Both teams got runners on base in the fifth, but the defenses held any runs from scoring. The Aztecs then added a run in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, a fielder's choice combined with a USU error, sending a runner home. The Aggies had a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning, but left both runners on. The Utah State defense then made quick work of SDSU in the seventh, retiring the side to end the game.
On the day, Utah State out-hit San Diego State, 11-9. The Aggies had three errors in the game, while the Aztecs had one. Sophomore
Delaney Hull made the start in the circle for USU, throwing 5.2 innings and striking out two batters. Freshman
Kapri Toone entered the game in relief in the sixth inning, earning her third save of the year. She is the first Aggie pitcher to record three or more saves in a season since 2015.
Utah State and San Diego State will wrap-up the series and the season on Saturday, May 11, at noon.
