LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball's 2019 season came to a close Saturday, as the Aggies fell to San Diego State, 2-1, in the series finale.
Utah State ends the season with a 17-30 overall record, going 6-17 in Mountain West play. San Diego State's campaign ends at 25-26 overall and 12-12 in league action.
It was a defensive battle early on. San Diego State loaded the bases in the top of the first, but an unassisted double play by senior first baseman
Bailee Trapp got the Aggies out of the jam. In the home half of the inning, sophomore outfielder
Stephanie Reed was hit by a pitch to lead off, tying the single-season hit-by-pitch record at 12. The USU defense retired the Aztecs in order in the second and third innings, with freshman pitcher
Kapri Toone striking out the side in the second.
Utah State's first hit of the game came in the bottom of the third on a single from freshman shortstop
Lexi Orozco. She was out as Reed reached on a fielder's choice, but a double from junior outfielder
Riley Plogger then brought in the first run of the day.
The Aztecs had one single in the fourth, but the Aggies turned another double play to end the inning. SDSU then loaded the bases in the fifth, but Utah State was able to get out of the inning again to keep its lead. However, the Aztecs opened the sixth with a single, followed by a home run to go up, 2-1. After San Diego State took the lead, Utah State was retired in order in the final two innings.
On the day, San Diego State out-hit Utah State, 8-3. The Aggies also had one error in the game. Toone pitched the complete game Saturday, striking out four batters and walking two.
