LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men's tennis sophomore Felipe Acosta and freshman Mitch Johnson have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athletes for the 2018-19 academic year. Acosta and Johnson were two of 707 individuals among NCAA Division I men's tennis student-athletes.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Acosta finished the 2018-19 campaign with an overall mark of 25-7 in singles, including a 20-3 ledger during the dual match season at the Nos. 3 and 4 spot, and a 5-4 record during the fall. His 20 dual match singles wins are tied with fellow  teammate junior Duro Opacic for the most in a single-season in program history. The sophomore from Chascomus, Argentina, went 5-1 during Mountain West play, as he ended the dual match season winning seven of his last eight matches. Acosta also competed in the International Tennis Federation Futures Tournament in Laguna Nigel, Calif., where he advanced to the Round of 32. Additionally, Acosta finished 16-14 in doubles during the 2018-19 year, going 13-11 at the Nos. 2 and 3 spot during the dual match season and 3-3 during the fall. Acosta was also recognized for his academic achievements by the Mountain West, earning academic all-MW honors and Mountain West Scholar Athlete accolades.

Johnson finished the 2018-19 year with an overall mark of 6-7 in singles, including 1-2 in dual match play at the No. 6 spot. The freshman from Centennial, Colo., also recorded a 5-5 mark in singles play during the fall campaign.
