LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer picked up its first victory of the 2019 season with a 1-0 win at South Dakota on Sunday afternoon. The result evens the Aggies record at 1-1-0 on the year, while the Coyotes also even their record at 1-1-0 with the loss.
The Aggies scored the only goal of the match when an Ashley Cardozo free kick was redirected off the head of junior defender Imelda Williams in the 39th minute. Utah State created more set piece opportunities throughout the opening half, logging five corner kicks to South Dakota's two.
Freshman keeper Diera Walton sealed the victory for the Aggies in the second half, recording each of her two saves during the final 45 minutes and logging a shutout in her collegiate debut. In all, South Dakota was credited with 15 shots to the Aggies' four.
"We were able to grind out a quality win on the road," USU head soccer coach Heather Cairns said after the match. "I'm proud of our team and how we were able to overcome adversity."
