BOISE, Idaho – Utah State men's tennis had a solid run at the Dar Walters Fall Classic this weekend, advancing a duo to the quarterfinal round and totalling 10 wins in the tournament. 

The tournament, hosted by Boise State, was a pairs event. Each participating school divided its roster into pairs that competed together throughout the tournament in both doubles and singles. Pairs earned one point for each doubles and singles win, with the best-of-three advancing to the next round. 

Play in Boise started Friday, where two teams of Aggies advanced. Sophomore Daniel Bushamuka spent the weekend paired with Southern Utah's Jake Williams. Facing Denver's Daniel Krulig and John Zakowski, the two dropped their doubles match, 6-4. In the singles split, Bushamuka defeated Krulig (1-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Williams topped Zakowski (6-3, 6-4). 

Aggie freshmen Arvid Hjalte and Christian Holmes were paired up against Paul Ohde and Bo-Han Li. Weber State advanced after winning doubles (6-3) and one of the singles matches. Hjalte took Ohde down in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), but Holmes fell to Li in a pair of 7-6 (4) decisions. 

In the final Utah State pairing, junior Felipe Acosta and freshman Javier Ruiz met Denver's Pedro Fernandez Del Valle and Ignatius Castelino. USU took the doubles point, 6-4, while Acosta defeated Fernandez Del Valle (7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-1). Ruiz fell to Castelino, 6-4, 7-6 (6), but the pair advanced to the second round. 

Second-round action got underway Saturday morning, as Bushamuka and Williams took on Kris Van Wyk and Michiel Van Shoor from Weber State. The Wildcat pair swept the three-point system, starting with a 7-5 doubles win. Both singles matches ended in straight sets, where Bushamuka fell to Van Wyk, 6-3, 6-1, and Williams fell to Van Shoor in a pair of 6-1 sets. 

Acosta and Ruiz earned a spot in the quarterfinals after sweeping its contests against Boise State's Ryland McDermott and Kemal Karagozoglu. The pair first took the doubles point with 6-2 win. Acosta defeated McDermott (6-2, 3-6, 6-1), and Ruiz topped Karagozgolu in straight sets (7-5, 6-1). 

In the quarterfinal round, Acosta and Ruiz saw another Boise State duo in Wyatt DeMulling and Simon Acra Costas. The Aggies took the doubles match, 6-3, but both were defeated in singles play. Acosta took DeMulling to three sets (6-1, 2-6, 6-3), while Ruiz fell in two (4-6, 2-6). 

In the consolation bracket, Hjalte and Holmes fell to Idaho State's Lukas Ridemar and Yohann Prinsenn. ISU took the doubles point, 6-4, along with one singles match. Holmes defeated Prinsen (6-2, 6-4), but the duo's run ended when Hjalte was topped by Ridemar (7-5, 6-3). Bushamuka and Williams are still standing on the consolation side, having defeated Fynn Lohse and Patrik Trhac from Idaho State. After taking the doubles win, 6-3, the pair split their singles contests. Bushamuka fell to Lohse (6-1, 6-1), but Williams saved the win with a three-set victory over Trhac (6-1, 1-6, 10-5).

Utah State has a long break in fall competition now, returning to action at ITA Regionals in Denver, Colo., Oct. 16-20.
