LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Freshman forward
Christiane Sundstrom scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 107th minute of Friday's double overtime match to give Utah State the 1-0 victory over UNLV (3-6, 0-1 Mountain West) in its Mountain West opener in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aggies improved their record to 6-3-0 and 1-0 in the MW. Fellow freshman
Diera Walton recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season in goal for the Aggies.
Sundstrom tucked her goal away in the lower right corner off of an assist from
Ashley Cardozo, her team-best sixth helper this season. Sundstrom is now the 12th Aggie to have scored a goal this season.
The Rebels logged 12 shots with just two on goal, both of which were saved by Walton. The Aggies had 21 shot attempts on the night, with eight on goal. Cardozo led USU with seven attempts, including three on goal. The center of the Utah State defense played in every minute as center backs
Kathryn Wynn and
Mealii Enos, along with midfielder
Amber Marshall logged 107 minutes.
Mountain West action continues for the Aggies on Sunday, Sept. 29, as Utah State faces Nevada (1-7, 0-1 MW) at 2 p.m. (MT), in Reno, Nev.
