LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior linebacker David Woodward was named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the Maxwell Football Club.

Woodward did everything he could for the Aggies in their season opener at Wake Forest last weekend. The native of Olympia, Wash., recorded a personal-best 24 tackles, including a career-high-tying 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks, to go along with a career-high two forced fumbles against the Demon Deacons.

Those 24 tackles and two forced fumbles are the most in the nation this season, while his 3.5 tackles for loss are tied for the fourth-most in the country. Furthermore, those 24 stops are tied for the second-most in both Utah State and Mountain West history.

Brian Longuevan set the single-game school record of 26 tackles in a 20-7 victory over in-state rival Weber State on Nov. 23, 1974, in Logan. Woodward matched the 24 tackles Johndale Carty had against Oklahoma State on Sept. 21, 1996, in Stillwater.

Mountain West-wise, Nevada's Albert Rosette holds the conference record with 25 tackles against Air Force in 2012, while the Wolf Pack's Asauni Rufus racked up 24 stops against the Falcons in 2017.

For his career, Woodward has 163 tackles, including 19.0 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks, six pass breakups, four forced fumbles, four quarterback hurries, three interceptions and one fumble recovery in just 23 games.

Woodward and the Aggies will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Stony Brook at 5:30 p.m., on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium. The Seawolves, who are members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), opened their season with a 35-10 victory over Bryant last Thursday.
