LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball concluded its season-opening homestand Tuesday in a 3-0 loss to in-state rival, Utah.
The Aggies were able to hang with the 19th-ranked Utes in each set, leading at least once in each. Utah eventually took each win, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-19.
The Utah State attack was spread across the court, with seven players contributing at least one kill. Junior middle blocker
Bailey Downing led the team with five kills, while sophomore middle Corrine Larsen hit a team-best .231 with four kills and just one error in 13 attempts.
The Aggie defense had its best moments on the block, as the team recorded a season-high 13 blocks to Utah's eight. Downing was also the team leader in that category as she tallied a career-best seven block assists to go with one solo.
As a team, USU hit .048 (20-16-83) to Utah's .222 (46-24-99).
Utah State takes to the road this weekend to play at the North Portland Marriott Invitational hosted by Portland. The Aggies will open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 6, with matches against Washington State (2-1) and Idaho (1-2) at 10:30 a.m. (MT) and 5 p.m., respectively. USU will then face the host-Pilots (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m.
