PORTLAND, Ore. – Utah State volleyball wrapped up its weekend at the North Portland Marriott Invitational Saturday, dropping a five-set match to the host-Portland Pilots.
At the conclusion of the tournament, freshman outside hitter
Madi Brunatti was named to the all-tournament team, as she ended the weekend hitting .128 (28-16-94) and had a double-double against Portland. Washington State's Charity Bradley was named tournament MVP.
Portland took a definitive first-set win, 25-14, but the Aggies responded well to take sets two and three, 25-18 and 25-17, respectively. The Pilots answered back to end it though, posting a 25-20 win in the fourth and a 15-4 victory in the fifth.
Brunatti led the Aggies with a double-double as she recorded 12 kills and 14 digs and hitting .257. Sophomore middle blocker
Corinne Larsen hit a team-high .471, tallying eight kills without an attack error. Utah State tallied 13 total blocks in the match, tying its season high. Larsen also led the Aggies in blocking, tallying a season-best seven on the day.
Utah State hit .148 (32-12-135) to Portland's .191 (63-33-157).
The Aggies return to tournament action next weekend at the Bay Area Invitational, co-hosted by the University of San Francisco and Saint Mary's. USU will play the Dons at USF on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. (MT). Play will continue across the Bay Bridge the following day, taking on Cornell at noon and the Gaels at 8 p.m.
