Ashley Cardozo Named America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week

Junior midfielder led Aggies to a pair of victories last week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State junior midfielder Ashley Cardozo was named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Sept. 8, it was announced Monday. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.

It is the first time this year and first time in her career that Cardozo has been named USU's student-athlete of the week. With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.

Cardozo (Holladay, Utah) recorded six points during the week, including one goal and four assists, as Utah State posted back-to-back wins against Weber State and Marquette. In USU's 2-1, double-overtime victory over the Wildcats, Cardozo assisted both goals via her service from corner kicks. In USU's 5-1 victory at Marquette, Cardozo scored a goal in the 32nd minute and then assisted on goals in the 66th and 84th minute, respectively.

Utah State will be back in action next week, playing a pair of matches in Illinois, opening the two-game road swing at Illinois State on Friday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. (MT). The road trip wraps up at UIC on Sunday, Sept. 15, at noon (MT).

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included: 
FOOTBALL
– Sophomore wide receiver Deven Thompkins (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored a pair of touchdowns in Utah State's 62-7 non-conference home win against Stony Brook last weekend. Thompkins' first touchdown came on a 45-yard punt return, the first of his career, while his second score was on a 10-yard reception. Overall, Thompkins had a career-high five receptions for a career-best 77 yards to go along with his one punt return as he finished the game with 122 all-purpose yards.

GOLF – Junior Andy Hess (Idaho Falls, Idaho) tied for 20th place with an even-par 216 (70-71-75) at the Air Force-hosted Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which is his sixth-career top-20 finish. Hess began the tournament with a 2-under 70 and then carded a 1-under 71 during his first 36 holes to give him 13 rounds under par in his career. USU finished the 18-team tournament in 10th place with a 54-hole score of 9-over 875 (292-286-297).  

VOLLEYBALL – Freshman outside hitter Madi Brunatti (Draper, Utah) was named to the North Portland Marriott Invitational All-Tournament team last weekend as Utah State lost matches to Washington State (3-1), Idaho (3-0) and Portland (3-2). Her best match of the tournament was against the host Pilots, as she posted her first-career double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, hitting a team-best .257 (12-3-35), while adding one ace and three block assists. USU began the week with a three-set home loss to Utah.
