LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men's tennis is set to open its 2020 season this weekend, as it hosts Grand Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. The match will be played indoors at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club in Logan.
USU competed in four fall tournaments, where junior Felipe Acosta led the Aggies with a 6-5 singles record and a 6-4 mark in doubles play. In 2019, Utah State posted an overall record of 19-9, while going 6-1 in Mountain West play. The Aggies return two letterwinners from a year ago in Acosta and senior Sergiu Bucur, and welcome five freshmen to the team. Along with the new players, Utah State is guided by head coach Aaron Paajanen and assistant coach Hunter Nicholas, who are both in their first season with the team.
Saturday is also the season opener for Grand Canyon. Last season, the Lopes posted an overall record of 19-7, while maintaining a perfect league ledger of 5-0. The 2019 campaign ended with a WAC title and trip to the NCAA Tournament. GCU's top returner is senior Lorenzo Fucile, who went 16-9 in singles and 15-5 in doubles play a year ago.
