USAFA, Colo. - Utah State women's basketball (6-13, 1-7 Mountain West) recorded its first Mountain West victory of the season with a 53-52 win over Air Force (4-15, 2-6 MW) inside Clune Arena on Wednesday night.
Three Aggies scored in double figures as sophomore guard
Steph Gorman had 14 points, senior forward
Hailey Bassett had 13 and senior guard
Lindsey Jensen-Baker had 12.
The game stayed close for most of the first two quarters with the Aggies leading 22-21 with just over four minutes to go in the second. However, USU closed out the period with an 8-0 run after a Bassett trey and a pair of Jensen-Baker layups for the 29-21 lead at the break. The Aggies extended the lead to double figures on multiple occasions in the third stanza, ending the quarter with a 47-35 lead.
Air Force broke open the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run to trim the lead to 47-46 with 5:10 left to play. A couple of Bassett jumpers gave the Aggies the 51-46 lead with 2:13 to go. The Falcons then tied the game at 51-51 with 1:04 remaining. Bassett made a pair of free throws and the Aggies went on to win it, 53-52.
Air Force was led by freshman guard Allyah Marlett with 15 points.
USU shot 46.7 percent (21-of-45) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from behind the arc and 44.4 percent (4-of-9) at the free throw line. Air Force shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from behind the 3-point line and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) at the free throw line.
Utah State concludes its Colorado trip as the Aggies take on Colorado State (9-10, 3-5 MW) on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m.
