LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (1-4) continues its 2020 season in Lake Elsinore, Calif., this weekend with five games at the Golden State Classic. USU will begin the tournament with two games on Friday, Feb. 14, against Hawai'i (2-3) at 10:30 a.m. (MT), and Portland State (1-4) at 3:30 p.m.
Tournament play continues on Saturday, Feb. 15, when the Aggies face San Diego (2-2) and UC Davis (4-1) on at 10 a.m., and 3 p.m., respectively. The weekend will close with a game against Seton Hall (2-2) on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m.
Utah State softball joins 11 other teams this weekend at the inaugural Golden State Classic. San José State serves as the tournament host, welcoming the Aggies, Army, Bradley, Hawai'i, LIU, Loyola Marymount, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Diego, Seton Hall and UC Davis. Games will be running on three fields at the Rosetta Canyon Sports Park in Lake Elsinore, Calif.
Tickets for the Golden State Classic games can be purchased at the gate. A full tournament pass is available for $50. Single-day tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and youth ages 11-18, and $5 for children ages 3-10. Parking will be $10 per car per day, or VIP parking is available for $50 per car for the full weekend.
Live stats and social media coverage will also be available for each of Utah State's games during the weekend.
Hawai'i went 2-3 in its home tournament to start the season last weekend. Senior utility player Angelique Ramos leads the Rainbow Wahine at the plate, as she hit .429 (6-of-14) in the tournament, including three doubles and a triple. Hawai'i is hitting .301 (37-of-123) as a team, while the pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.90. Sophomore Isabella Dino made three starts in the circle last weekend, striking out a team-high eight batters. Bob Coolen is in his 29th season as the head coach at Hawai'i, where he has an all-time record of 1,008-617. The Aggies and Rainbow Warriors have a long history of competition, with Hawai'i leading the series, 40-16. The two teams last met in 2018, a 3-1 win for Hawai'i.
Portland State comes into the weekend with a 1-4 record, earning its sole win in the season opener against Western Michigan. Senior infielder Darian Lindsey led the Viking offense, batting .333 (5-of-15) on the weekend. In all, Portland State is hitting .233 (28-of-120). The Vikings have a team ERA of 6.52, with senior Katie Schroeder earning the team's sole win. Meadow McWhorter is in her fourth season as the head coach at Portland State, where she has an overall record of 48-105. The Vikings lead the all-time series against the Aggies, 7-3, but the teams have not played since 2014.
San Diego opened its season with a 2-2 record. Junior utility player Hayley Hensley hit a team-high .364 (4-of-11), while the team batted .270 (27-of-100) overall. The Torero pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.79, with senior Delaney Heller leading the group with a 2-1 record and a 0.98 ERA. Jessica Pistole is in her first season at the helm of the San Diego program. The Toreros lead the all-time series, 6-2, but the Aggies have won the last two contests.
UC Davis went 4-1 its opening weekend, falling just to Boise State in a home tournament. Freshman infielder Leah Polson leads the California Aggies at the plate, batting .538 (7-of-13), while senior utility player Isabella Leon drove in a team-high 10 RBIs. As a team, the Aggies are hitting .371 (53-of-143). UC Davis has utilized three pitchers, who have a combined ERA of 3.60. Erin Thorpe is in her sixth season as the head coach of the Aggies, where she has an all-time record of 98-113. The all-Aggie series is tied, 3-3, with UC Davis winning the last meeting in 2018.
Seton Hall enters the weekend with a 2-2 record. Freshman outfielder Abby Wingo leads the Pirate offense, as she is batting .533 (8-of-15), while the team is hitting .347 (41-of-118). The four Seton Hall pitchers have an overall ERA of 2.33, where freshman Shelby Smith is yet to give up a run. Paige Smith is in her eighth season as the head coach at Seton Hall, where she has an overall record of 146-210-1. The Aggies and Pirates have met just once in the past, which was a win for Utah State in 2007.
Utah State posted a 1-4 record at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Titan Classic last weekend, recording its sole win over Loyola Marymount. All four Aggie pitchers made an appearance over the weekend, compiling a combined ERA of 4.24. The group allowed 38 hits and 33 runs, while striking out 12 batters and walking 17. At the plate, freshman outfielder Mazie Makenzie batted a team-best .400 (6-of-15), including one double. On the weekend, Utah State hit seven doubles and one home run.
