LOGAN, Utah – Utah State's men's tennis team split a home doubleheader on Friday with a 4-2 loss to Northern Arizona and a 6-1 win against Weber State at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club. USU is now 3-7 on the season with today's results.
 
Utah State began the day against Northern Arizona and dropped the doubles point. Junior Felipe Acosta and freshman Javier Ruiz were the first tandem to finish as they fell to the Lumberjacks' Eban Straker-Meads and Facundo Tumosa at the first position, 6-3. Aggie freshmen Christian Holmes and Roko Savin followed with a 6-2 win at the third position against Daniel Dillon and Chris Steele. NAU then claimed the doubles point as Alex Groves and David Nguyen posted a 6-5 win at the second position against the USU tandem of senior Sergiu Bucur and freshman Arvid Hjalte.
 
In singles, Bucur was the first off of the court as he posted a straight-sets win (6-0, 6-3) against Tumosa at the No. 2 spot. Northern Arizona then claimed the next two matches as Straker-Meads won in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) against Acosta at the No. 1 spot, and Groves won in three-sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) against Ruiz at the No. 3 spot. USU fought back as Hjalte won in three-sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) against Steele at the No. 4 spot, but the Lumberjacks won the match with a straight-sets victory (6-4, 6-2) at the No. 5 spot. USU freshman Roko Savin's match against Nguyen was left unfinished as Savin posted a 6-4 win the first set. 
 
In its second match of the day, Utah State won the doubles point as Bucur and Hjalte defeated Weber State's Sebastian Buxman and Arthur Serafim at the second position, 6-1, and Holmes and Savin defeated WSU's Cezary Walkusz and Brendan Barr at the third position, 6-2.
 
In singles, Ruiz was the first off of the court with a straight-sets win (6-2, 6-1) against Bo-Han Li at the No. 3 spot. Hjalte followed with a straight sets win (6-3, 6-3) against Buxman at the No. 4 spot, and Bucur secured the win for the Aggies with a straight-sets win (7-5, 6-3) against Serafim at the No. 2 spot.
 
Both teams decided to play out the final three matches and Utah State posted two more victories as Acosta won in three-sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-2) against Kris van Wyk at the No. 1 spot, and Savin won his match against Barr at the No. 6 spot as the Weber State play retired due to injury after winning the first set, 6-4. WSU's lone win in the match came at the No. 5 spot as Walkusz defeated Holmes in three sets (7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-3), 10-6.
 
Utah State will return to action on Friday, March 6, when it plays at UC Santa Barbara.
