BOISE, Idaho - With the game tied up at 56-56 with 1.4 seconds remaining in regulation, senior forward
Marlene Aniambossou hit the game winning basket over two Bronco defenders to give the Utah State women's basketball team (7-17, 2-11 MW) the 58-56 victory over Boise State (16-9, 8-5 MW) on Saturday inside ExtraMile Arena in Boise, Idaho.
Utah State forced 13 Boise State turnovers in the first two quarters, and capitalized on it for 12 points. The Aggies ended the second quarter with a 13-3 run to lead 28-19 at the half. The 19 points by the Broncos were their second fewest scored in the first half this season.
Boise State came out hot in the third quarter, opening the period with a 11-1 run to take the 30-29 lead with 4:39 remaining in the third. The Broncos extended their lead to double figures in the fourth stanza, leading by 11, 54-43, with 3:13 left in regulation.
Then the Aggies rallied. Junior guard
Emmie Harris was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws, and followed with an and-1 to trim the lead to five, 54-49, with 2:27 on the clock. A bucket from Aniambossou and a three from sophomore guard
Steph Gorman tied the game at 54-54 with 59 seconds to go. With the clock winding down, Aniambossou made a layup with two seconds to play. Boise State then fired back with a bucket of its own.
USU had a timeout left and advanced the ball with 1.4 seconds left. Senior forward
Hailey Bassett found Aniambossou, who made the jumper over two Bronco defenders as time expired for the 58-56 Aggie victory.
Utah State scored 19 points off of Boise State's 18 turnovers, and scored 12 fast break points compared to BSU's three. The Aggies also held the Broncos to a season-low 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the field.
Three Aggies scored in double figures as Gorman had 20 points, Aniambossou had 11 and Bassett had 10.
The Broncos were led by senior guard Riley Lupfer with 20 points.
USU shot 37.0 percent (17-of-46) from the field, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from behind the arc and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) at the free throw line. BSU shot 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from behind the 3-point line and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) at the free throw line.
Utah State returns to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum to host Colorado State (10-13, 4-8 MW) on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m.
