BOISE, Idaho – Utah State volleyball (15-6, 7-2 MW) put up a fight in a Tuesday night Mountain West match, taking a five-set victory over Boise State.
The Broncos won the first set, 25-23, before the Aggies evened things up with a 25-21 win in the second. The teams each took a 25-22 victory in the third and fourth sets, with USU clinching the match on a 15-11 win in the fifth.
The USU victory snapped a six-match winning streak in the series for the Broncos. Additionally, it marked the Aggies' first win in Boise since 2013, Utah State's first season in the Mountain West. With the win, Utah State extends its winning streak to four matches, its longest streak since winning five in a row during the 2017 campaign.
Making just her second appearance of the season, freshman outside hitter
Adna Mehmedovic had a dominant match for the Aggies. She finished the night with 17 kills, hitting .379 overall and adding five blocks and two service aces. Senior outside
Kristy Frank had a team-high 18 kills on the night, while junior middle
Kylee Stokes and sophomore outside
Tatum Stall added 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Stall recorded her fifth double-double of the season, adding 10 digs to her stat line. Sophomore libero
Abby Peterson had the first double-double of her career in the win, tallying 16 digs and a career-high 12 assists. Freshman setter
Beatriz Rodrigues led the team with 28 assists, while sophomore middle blocker
Inka Mehtola had a team-high eight blocks.
Boise State came out strong, leading by as many as 11 in the first set. The night-long battle started there, as the Aggies climbed back, keeping the Broncos at set point for five points. The second set was close from the start. Utah State took its first lead at the 18-17 mark, with the match-winning point coming on a block from senior middle blocker
Corinne Larsen and junior middle
Kylee Stokes.
USU took a quick 4-0 lead to start the third set, but a timely Bronco timeout started their rally back. The score remained tight through the middle of the set before the Aggies pushed through a 9-1 run to regain the lead. Back-to-back kills from Stall secured the USU victory. In the fourth, Boise State again took an early lead, putting Utah State in a hole it was never quite able to climb out of. A four-point run late in the set put the Aggies within reach, but the Broncos closed it out with two-straight kills.
The Aggies put their feet on the gas to start the fifth, never letting up. After taking a 3-0 lead to start the set, the USU defense never allowed the Broncos to score more than two points in a row. Fittingly, the match ended on a kill from Frank, followed by a service ace from Mehmedovic.
On the night, Utah State hit .247 (69-28-166), while Boise State hit .224 (55-23-143).
The Aggies return home this weekend, playing host to Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.
