LOGAN, Utah – Utah State closed out the home non-conference portion of its schedule with a 34-20 loss to No. 13 BYU in front of an electric crown Friday night on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium.
The Cougars (5-0) scored the first 10 points of the game and held off every comeback-bid the Aggies (3-2) threw at them.
Grad junior quarterback
Logan Bonner completed 21-of-41 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, to go along with an interception. His 28-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver
Deven Thompkins pulled the Aggies to within 27-20 with 9:52 to go in the game.
Thompkins finished with nine receptions for 125 yards and the lone TD.
BYU outgained USU 466-336, averaging 7.1 yards per play. Baylor Romney was 15-of-19 for 187 yards and a touchdown, while Tyler Allgeier rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars.
Utah State could never establish its run game against BYU as the Cougars limited the Aggies to a season-low 22 yards rushing on 35 carries.
Senior placekicker
Connor Coles was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals as he kicked a career-long 52-yarder, to go along with a 45-yarder.
Junior wide receiver
Justin McGriff accounted for the Aggies' other score of the night as he caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Bonner to pull USU within 17-10 in the first half.
BYU led 24-13 at the break.
Junior safety
Hunter Reynolds and grad senior defensive tackle
Marcus Moore had a game-best nine tackles apiece for USU.
