LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer hadn't lost a Mountain West contest at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field since Oct. 25, 2019, but that streak came to an end on Friday as Fresno State posted a 2-1 victory over the Aggies during a rainy afternoon.
Utah State (9-4-1, 2-3-0 MW) got off to a fast start when senior midfielder Kami Warner tested the Bulldogs' keeper less than a minute into the match. Warner's shot was parried over the top of the goal, but the Aggies continued to play on the front foot and put the first goal on the board in the beginning of the sixth minute. Freshman forward Bizzy Arevalo logged her first collegiate goal after a header by senior midfielder Ashley Cardozo found the feet of Arevalo, who then poked the ball over a charging keeper.
Utah State finished the half with six shots to Fresno State's five, but the Bulldogs flipped the script in the second half by logging 11 shots to the Aggies' four. The advantage created a pair of goals for the visitors after sloppy weather led to a sloppy tackle for Utah State inside its own box in the 64th minute. Fresno State drew the penalty and tucked the ball into the back of the net from the spot to tie the score at 1-1. The Bulldogs then scored the game winner on a headed cross in the 80th minute.
Overall, Fresno State (6-3-3, 4-0-1 MW) finished the match with 16 shots to the Aggies' 10. Warner and sophomore midfielder Alysia Butters led the Aggies with three shots apiece. USU junior keeper Diera Walton finished with three saves.
Utah State returns to the pitch on Sunday, hosting San José State at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field at noon.
