LOS ANGELES, California --- Utah State men's tennis opened play Friday at the LMU Invitational, the team's final scheduled tournament of the fall season.
In doubles play, three Aggie duos faced off versus teams from Loyola Marymount. Junior Roko Savin and freshman Sergi Mico Fenollar defeated LMU's Emin Torlic and Charles Roberts, 6-4. Juniors David Cierny and Bodin Zarkovic pushed LMU's Daniel Moreno and Jose Dominguez Alonso to a tiebreak before falling in a 7-6 (7) loss. Senior Felipe Acosta and junior Javier Ruiz lost in their matchup against LMU's Manoel de Alencar and Rana-Roop Bhullar, 6-4.
Moving to singles play, USU played opponents from UC Irvine. Mico Fenollar completed an undefeated day with a 6-3, 7-5 win over UCI's Noah Zamora. Acosta posted USU's last victory of the day over Rithvik Krishan, 6-2, 6-1. Zarkovic and Savin each forced a first-set tiebreak in their matches before both lost in straight sets to Mike Mkrtchian and Ali Amiri, respectively. Cierny lost to Riccardo Roberto, 7-5, 6-2. Ruiz also lost in his match versus UCI's Matthew Sah, 6-4, 6-4.
Singles and doubles play will continue at the LMU Invitational on Saturday.
