SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Boise State leads the all-time series, 26-11, including an 11-6 record in Logan. In 2019-20, the teams split the regular-season series, each team winning on the road, as Boise State won in Logan, 65-59, and USU won in Boise, 58-56. The Broncos finished the 2019-20 campaign with a 24-9 overall mark, and a 13-5 record in league play to finish second in the MW. They then went on to defeat Fresno State in the Mountain West championship game to earn their fourth-straight tournament title.
This season the Broncos are averaging 67.8 points per game while shooting 41.6 percent (470-of-1129) from the field and 25.6 percent (68-of-266) from behind the 3-point line, as well as 66.5 percent (145-of-218) at the free throw line. Junior guard Jade Loville leads Boise State's scorers, averaging 16.5 points per game, while senior center Mallory McGwire leads the team and ranks second in the league with 8.7 rebounds per contest. Freshman guard Mary Kay Naro holds the team lead with 79 assists on the year.
Defensively, the Broncos have allowed 65.1 points per game, with opponents shooting 37.6 percent (408-of-1086) from the field, 29.8 percent (91-of-305) from behind the arc and 71.1 percent (199-of-280) at the free throw line. Freshman forward Alexis Mark leads the team in steals with 24, while freshman forward Abby Muse leads the squad with 27 blocks.
SCORING 20-PLUS
In back-to-back games against Fresno State and then Wyoming, graduate forward
Jessica Chatman reached the 20-point scoring plateau. The Ridgefield, Wash., native dropped a career-high 26 points against the Bulldogs, followed by a 21-point outing against the Cowgirls. Prior to this season, Chatman had scored 20-plus just once.
PLUG AND PLAY
The Aggies have used 11 unique starting lineup combinations through 17 games this season, with 10 different players making starting appearances and no lineup being used more than four times. For comparison, last year's squad used six staring lineups through 31 contests.
LINEUP ANCHORS
Chatman and sophomore guard
Faith Brantley have been the two consistent starters for USU this season, each starting all 17 games. Chatman currently ranks 11th in the conference in minutes per game (31.2).
GAME-WINNER IN BOISE
Last season's matchup between the Aggies and Broncos in Boise was a thriller, coming down to the last second. After Boise State hit a shot to tie the game at 56-all with 1.4 seconds left in regulation,
Marlene Aniambossou got the ball on an inbound pass and shot from the baseline over two Bronco defenders as time expired to give the Aggies their first win in Boise since 2011.
FROM AMERICAN FORK TO LOGAN
Utah State has two alumni of American Fork (Utah) High School on their roster in junior forward
Taylor Franson and freshman guard/forward
Halle Nelson. The duo played one season together as teammates in 2017, when they helped the Cavemen win the Utah 5A state championship with a 25-1 overall record.
