BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Utah State men's basketball's run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end in the First Round as the Aggies lost 65-53 to Texas Tech in their opening game. The loss gives the Aggies a 20-9 overall record for the year, marking the first time USU has recorded three-straight 20-win seasons since 2010-13.
USU junior forward
Justin Bean led the Aggies with a team-high 13 points and finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight boards. He was followed by redshirt junior
Marco Anthony with 11 points.
Neemias Queta was the final double-digit scorer for USU, finishing with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, while adding seven blocks and a career-high-tying six assists. Queta is only the second player in the NCAA Tournament since 1985-86 to finish with 10-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, five-plus assists and five-plus blocks.
Utah State put together a 10-0 run early in the first half to take a 10-5 lead just over five minutes into the game. Senior forward
Alphonso Anderson capped the run with back-to-back layups with 14:39 on the clock. The Aggies then closed the half with a 12-3 run to take a 26-23 lead into the intermission.
Texas Tech made its move in the second half, putting together a 24-4 run to take a 49-35 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Aggies pared the deficit to single digits, 49-41, behind points scored by Queta, freshman guard
Rollie Worster and Bean with 7:39 to play. However, it was as close as Utah State would come as the Red Raider lead grew to as much as 16, 65-49, before a free throw by Queta and a 3-ball by Worster led to the final score, 65-53.
The NCAA Tournament berth marked just the third time in school history that the Aggies have received an at-large bid, and the first since 2010. Overall, USU has qualified for the NCAA Tournament all three years under head coach
Craig Smith, the first time the Aggies have secured an NCAA Tournament berth for three-straight years since 2008-11.
