USU Volleyball Tops Nevada in Four Sets Thursday

LOGAN, Utah – Competing in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum for the first time since 2013, Utah State volleyball (4-8, 4-8 MW) posted a 3-1 win over Nevada Thursday.

The Aggies took a 2-0 lead, winning the first and second sets by scores of 25-22. Nevada bounced back to take the third set, 28-25, but USU answered with a 25-16 win to clinch the match.

Utah State had two players with 10 kills apiece, as junior outside hitter Whitney Solosabal-Parks and freshman outside Tatum Stall each reached double digits. Senior opposite side hitter Bailey Downing added nine kills, while junior middle blocker Autumn Spafford had a career-best eight. Spafford also hit a fiery .571 on the night, with no errors. 

The Aggies recorded 10 service aces in the win, reaching double digits for the fourth time this season. Stall led the team with three aces of her own. USU setters Kalena Vaivai and Ashlee McUne split time on the court, with McUne leading with a career-high 21 assists. The Aggies tallied 13.5 blocks to Nevada's nine, with Spafford putting up a team-best eight. 

Despite traveling with just seven players, Nevada battled in each set. Both teams used long runs in every set to take control. In all, the match saw 17 ties and eight lead changes. With the Aggies at match point in the third set, the Wolf Pack scored four-straight to tie it, forcing extra points and earning the victory. Utah State came out strong in the fourth, highlighting the set with a 6-0 run to again make it to match point. Nevada managed two more points, but a kill from junior middle blocker Corinne Larsen cemented the win for USU. 

Overall, Utah State hit .164 (51-27-146) while Nevada hit .120 (44-27-142) on the night.

Utah State hits the road to close the week, taking on Colorado State on Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m.
