Utah State Softball Playing Pair of Doubleheaders in San Diego

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (5-8, 0-0 MW) continues its 2021 season this weekend with two doubleheaders in San Diego. The Aggies will play at San Diego (3-8) on Friday, March 5, starting at 4 p.m. (MT). USU will then play two games at UC San Diego (1-1) on Saturday, March 6, beginning at 11 a.m. 

Per the current COVID-19 guidelines set by the state of California and the County of San Diego, fans are not permitted to attend events at either San Diego or UC San Diego. The games at San Diego will be streamed on the USD Athletics Facebook page, while Saturday's action at UC San Diego will be played on ESPN3. Live stats will also be available for each game. Additionally, social media updates will be available on the Utah State Softball social media pages. Links to each option are posted on the team schedule on the USU Athletics website, and will be available on the social media pages prior to each game.

San Diego enters the weekend with a 3-8 record, but plays twice Thursday. The Toreros are batting .193 (50-of-259), led by freshman infielder Amanda Limon, who is hitting .345 (10-of-29). San Diego has a team ERA of 3.64, with six pitchers having seen time in the circle. MJ Knighten is in her first season as the head coach of the Torero program. San Diego leads the all-time series against Utah State, but the Aggies have won the last three meetings, including a five-inning no-hitter last season. 

In its first season as a Division I team, UC San Diego welcomes the Aggies with a 1-1 record, having split a pair of games against Grand Canyon. Junior catcher/first baseman Clarissa Reynoso led the Tritons in the series with GCU, batting .600 (3-of-5), while the team hit .271 (19-of-71). Three pitchers have combined to post a 3.11 ERA for UCSD. Patti Gerckens is in her 29th season as the head coach at UC San Diego, where she has an all-time record of 780-612. Saturday will mark the first-ever meetings between the Aggies and Tritons.

For the Aggies, senior outfielder Kayla Fielder leads the team at the plate, batting .417 (10-of-24). In the circle, senior Delaney Hull leads with a 2.71 ERA in her six appearances. As a team, USU is hitting .230 (78-of-339) and has a combined ERA of 4.81.
