SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Utah State softball (6-9) played a doubleheader at San Diego Friday, splitting the two games. The Toreros won the first game, 3-1, and the Aggies responded to take an 8-2 victory in the second game.
GAME ONE
Sophomore outfielder
Mazie Macfarlane led the Aggie offense in the first game of the day, recording three of the Aggies' six hits and marking the third three-hit game of her career.
San Diego scored all three of its runs in the third inning. The Toreros put together four singles, along with a fielder's choice to bring in a pair of runs. A sac fly then gave USD the third run of the inning. Utah State responded in the top of the fourth with its sole run of the game. Sophomore shortstop
Lexi Orozco led off with a single to center field, scoring on a double from
Mazie Macfarlane. She also looked to come around to score, but was out at the plate as sophomore catcher
Makenzie Macfarlane batted into a fielder's choice.
The Aggies had just one more hit through the remainder of the game, unable to complete the comeback.
Senior
Delaney Hull pitched the complete game for USU, striking out five batters and not allowing any walks.
GAME TWO
Utah State struck early in the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Senior outfielder
Kayla Fielder led off with a single, stealing second and taking third on a wild pitch.
Mazie Macfarlane then walked, while back-to-back singles from Orozco and freshman third baseman
Zaia Castruita sent both runners home.
San Diego answered with a single run in the second inning, using a single and an error to score. The Toreros then tied the score in the third, as a triple and groundout combined to get a runner home. Utah State had at least one baserunner in each inning, but did not take the lead back until the top of the sixth.

Leah Molina took third on a groundout and scored on a double from sophomore second baseman
Tyler Thornton.
Things exploded for the Aggie offense in the seventh inning. Fielder and
Mazie Macfarlane opened the inning with back-to-back singles, forcing a USD pitching change. Junior first baseman
Gabriella Jimenez loaded the bases on a walk, while Orozco singled to send Fielder home. Castruita followed with a double, clearing the bases and giving USU the 7-2 lead.
San Diego made another pitching change then, but
Makenzie Macfarlane hit a bunt single. Junior designated player
Emily Tidd flew out to right field, with the Toreros making an error on the throw and allowing another run to go home. Before the inning ended, Thornton was hit by a pitch and freshman outfielder
Libbie Hawker batted into a fielder's choice. USD got a double out of the bottom of the inning, but the game came to an end on a foul out in right field.
Junior
Kapri Toone pitched the complete game, dealing a season-high eight strikeouts. Fielder finished the game with three hits in five at-bats, while four other Aggies had two hits each.
The Aggies continue play in San Diego on Saturday, March 6, as they play a doubleheader at UC San Diego. The first game is slated to begin at 11 a.m. (MT), with the second immediately following.
