LARAMIE, Wyo. - Utah State soccer lost 1-0 at Wyoming on Friday afternoon in its delayed 2020 season opener, despite more than doubling the number of shots by the Cowgirls, 7-3.
The lone goal of the contest came in the 31st minute as Wyoming slotted the ball under a diving Diera Walton. The shot was one of just three for Wyoming during the match as the Aggies finished with seven shots, including five in the second half alone.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Hughes had the first of five USU shots over the final 45 minutes when her attempt at 49:47 on the clock was saved by a diving Wyoming keeper. Senior midfielder Ashley Cardozo had the second of her team-best three shots 11 minutes later, but the attempt was directed at the Wyoming keeper who made the save. Junior forward Jordan Foraker narrowly missed a shot from just outside the 18 in the 77th minute as her attempt sailed just high.
With just 12 seconds remaining, Cardozo lined up for a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, but the kick also missed high and sealed the victory for the Cowgirls.
Wyoming used a pair of keepers during the game with Hannah Lee playing the opening 45 minutes and logging two saves. Alex Daws played the second half and recorded three saves. Sophomore Diera Walton started in net for the Aggies, playing the entire 90 minutes and recording one save on three Wyoming shots.
