LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (10-21, 2-10 MW) ended its weekend of Mountain West action Sunday in a 4-2 loss at Boise State.
After fighting through the first two innings, Utah State was first to score Sunday, as senior outfielder
Stephanie Reed hit a solo home run in the top of the third. Unfortunately, that lead didn't last long, as the Broncos responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. After a walk, a triple and a double sent two runs across, with a third hit following and motivating a USU pitching change.
The Aggies answered quickly, as senior third baseman
Kennedy Hira led off the fourth inning with a home run. The USU defense held in the bottom of the inning after Boise State got two runners on base, ending the inning with a double play. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Broncos loaded the bases on two walks and a single, then plated two runs on a double to left center.
Both teams got two runners aboard in the sixth inning, while the Aggies added one last one in the top of the seventh. No one was able to score though, ending the game and securing the series weep for the Broncos.
Freshman
Jessica Stewart was the starting pitcher for the Aggies Sunday, throwing 2.2 innings before being relieved by junior
Kapri Toone. Together the two pitchers walked four batters and struck out one. Utah State finished the game with four hits, while allowing nine from Boise State.
Utah State returns to action on Wednesday, April 21, for a midweek contest at Utah Valley at 4 p.m. The Aggies then host San Diego State in a three-game Mountain West series. USU and the Aztecs will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 24, starting at noon. The third game is scheduled for noon on Sunday, April 25.
