ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Utah State volleyball (5-10, 5-10 MW) closed its delayed 2020 season Saturday in a 3-2 loss at New Mexico.
Utah State and New Mexico split the first two sets of the match, with the Lobos taking the first, 25-21, and the Aggies winning the second, 25-18. USU never trailed in the third set, going on to win, 25-15. The Aggies started out dominating the fourth set and leading by 10 early on, but the Lobos fought back to take the set, 26-24. New Mexico used that momentum to control the fifth set, clinching the match with a 15-11 win.
The Aggies had four players finish the match with double digit kills. Junior outside hitter
Kristy Frank led the team with 18, followed by junior middle blocker
Corinne Larsen with 16. Freshman outside hitter
Tatum Stall and senior opposite side hitter
Bailey Downing each added 10 kills.
Utah State had three players record double-doubles in the loss. Frank and Stall each tallied 13 digs to go with their kills. Sophomore setter
Kalena Vaivai finished the match with 46 assists and 12 digs. Larsen and Downing led the team with five blocks apiece, while freshman libero
Abby Peterson had a team-high 17 digs.
Overall, Utah State hit .185 (62-30-173), while New Mexico hit .161 (54-28-161).
