LOGAN, Utah - Utah State senior Ashley Cardozo scored from the spot minutes into the game and then put away the game winner late in the second half to give the Aggies a 2-1 victory over Colorado State on Friday afternoon. The match marked the first time that USU has played at its home venue, Chuck & Gloria Bell Field, this season.
The victory also extended the Aggies' four-match unbeaten streak as Utah State (4-4-1, 4-4-1 MW) has won three of its last four matches. Cardozo put the home side up early, cooly converting from the penalty spot in the 7th minute for her first goal of the season.
Offense was at a premium during the opening 45 minutes as Utah State finished with just four shots to the Rams' two and went into intermission with the 1-0 lead.
Colorado State (2-3-1, 2-3-1 MW), playing on the road for the first time this season, was able to equalize in the 54th minute when Taylor Steinke was successful on a penalty kick, going head-to-head against Utah State keeper Diera Walton. Walton had saved two of three penalty kicks this season before getting beaten by Steinke.
The Aggies recorded the game winner in the 68th minute when senior defender Taylor Garza-Freeman played a through ball to senior midfielder Kami Warner, guiding her to the CSU end line. Warner put a perfect cross through the box and Cardozo was able to run onto the ball and put it into the back of the net for her second goal of the match.
The Utah State defense then took it from there as the Rams finished with nine shots to Utah State's 10. Cardozo led the Aggies with four shots, including three on frame, while Walton wrapped up her afternoon with five saves.
Sophomore defender Kristin Rhees and freshman defender Kelsey Steed played the entire 90 minutes for the Aggies. Steed has played every minute for the Aggies this season, totaling more than 832 minutes on the pitch this year.
Utah State wraps up its season on Sunday, hosting Wyoming on Senior Day at noon. Garza-Freeman, the lone senior not returning for the Aggies, will be honored before the match.
