LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (14-30, 4-17 MW) wrapped up the 2021 season Saturday, posting a 5-4 win over New Mexico.
While the runs didn't come in the first inning like they did in the first two games of the series, New Mexico took an early lead in the finale. After one out in the top of the second, the Lobos loaded the bases on three consecutive singles. A walk then brought in the first run of the day. A sac fly came brought a run in on the next batter, but the Aggies made a second out on the play to limit the damage and end the half-inning.
After going three up, three down in the first inning, Utah State had at least one base runner in every other inning. A triple from junior first baseman
Gabriella Jimenez highlighted the second inning, while the Aggies added a pair of singles in the fourth. Senior outfielder
Stephanie Reed had a hard hit to first, while senior outfielder
Kayla Fielder added one to right center. Reed made it safely to third on Fielder's hit, but was called out at the plate trying to score.
The bottom of the fourth worked out in USU's favor, where the team took the lead. With two outs on the board, Jimenez singled up the middle. Junior shortstop
Lexi Orozco followed with a blast of a home run that landed across the street from LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field. The inning continued as junior catcher
Sydnee Smith was walked, scoring on a double from senior designated player
Leah Molina. Reed was hit by a pitch and Fielder added another single to load the bases, but the Lobos made the final out on the first at-bat after a pitching change.
The Aggie offense continued to perform well in the fifth inning, where sophomore outfielder
Mazie Macfarlane hit a lead-off single. Senior third baseman
Kennedy Hira then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring on Orozco's second home run of the day.
The Lobos threatened in each inning after the second, but the Aggie defense held all runners until the top of the seventh. With two outs on the board, a walk and a home run gave New Mexico the chance to tie the game, but a ball caught in foul territory ended the game.
Junior
Kapri Toone pitched the complete game for the Aggies, striking out two batters and allowing five walks.
