LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer picked up a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside on Friday afternoon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field, running its unbeaten streak to 12 matches, the longest such streak in school history.
The match didn't follow the Aggies' usual script as the Highlanders scored the opening goal in the third minute, marking the first time that Utah State had trailed in a game all season. UC Riverside carried the 1-0 lead into the break, despite USU having a five to two advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes.
Utah State broke through in the second half when junior forward Nicole Hadlock scored her first goal as an Aggie in the 54th minute. Hadlock followed a shot by senior midfielder Ashley Cardozo and blasted the ball at point-blank range to tie the game at 1-1. Senior forward Sammie Murdock broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when she fired a ball off the left post that then bounced into the opposite corner. The goal marked the second game in a row that Murdock has scored the game winner.
Cardozo logged an assist on each of the goals to bring her total to six on the year, good for sixth in a single season in school history and tying her mark set during the 2017 season. The six assists are also the most in the Mountain West this season and match or exceed the assist total of nine teams in the league.
Utah State's backline was anchored by a trio of players that went the distance for the Aggies as sophomores Kylie Olsen and Kelsey Steed-Kaufusi, along with redshirt-freshman Addy Symonds played the entire 90 minutes of the match.
Utah State is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 16, hosting Utah at 5 p.m., punctuating a four-game homestand for the Aggies.
