OREM, Utah – Utah State volleyball (6-4) opened its final week of non-conference play in a 3-1 loss at Utah Valley Tuesday.
UVU took the early lead with a 25-19 win in set one, with the Aggies taking set two, 25-20. The Wolverines answered with 25-23 and 25-19 victories to end the match.
Utah Valley led from start to finish in the first set, opening the match with five-straight points. The Aggies answered with a four-point run of their own, but were never able to gain enough momentum to stop the Wolverines. USU responded well in the second set, however. While Utah Valley briefly took the lead, a 10-1 run by the Aggies put them back in control. USU then secured the set on a block from senior middle blocker
Corinne Larsen and freshman middle
Katie Langford.
The Aggies didn't trail in the third set until the Wolverines took a lead at 21-20. The teams traded points and timeouts from there, but Utah Valley was able to close it out. UVU carried that momentum to the fourth set, leading by as many as five on two different occasions before the Aggies caught up to tie the score at 10. Another 5-0 run gave the Wolverines the last push they needed to clinch the match.
Sophomore outside hitter
Tatum Stall led the Aggies with a season-high 16 kills, with junior setter
Kalena Vaivai recording a team-high 20 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero
Abby Peterson tallied 19 digs, while junior middle blocker
Kennedi Boyd led the team with eight blocks. On the night, USU hit .113 (42-27-133), while UVU had a .201 (54-25-144) attack.
Utah State returns to action in a match at Southern Utah on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. The Aggies then return home to host Idaho State on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m.
