NOTES - USU Soccer Opening Mountain West Play this Week

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer (7-1-1) opens Mountain West Conference play this week, hosting Nevada (1-5-0) on Friday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m., before traveling to Las Vegas for a match at UNLV (6-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. (MT).

Best Start in School History
• Utah State finished its non-conference slate with a 7-1-1 record, its best mark in program history going into the conference season.
 
• The Aggies are currently in first place in the Mountain West standings with UNLV in second.
 
Ranked Among the Region's Best
Utah State is currently ranked seventh in the Pacific Region of the United Soccer Coaches' poll, representing the only team in the MW and one of only two teams outside the Pac-12 appearing in the poll. The Pacific Region is made up of teams from the Western Athletic Conference, Pac-12 and MW.
 
Conference Openers
• Utah State is 8-14-2 all-time in conference openers, but are better at home with a 14-9-1 mark when opening in Logan.
 
• The Aggies and Wolf Pack will be meeting for the second time in a MW opener, but for the first time since the 2013 season. Nevada posted a 2-0 victory over Utah State in USU's first ever contest in MW play.
 
Conference Weekly Award Sweep
Utah State swept the MW weekly awards this week as senior midfielder Ashley Cardozo was named the Offensive Player of the Week, junior keeper Diera Walton was named the Defensive Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Tenzi Knowles was named the Freshman of the Week.
 
Atop the Mountain West
• Cardozo leads the MW in total points (14) behind four goals (second in the MW) and a league-best six assists. Cardozo is also second in the league in total shots (21).
 
• Walton leads the MW with three shutouts this season and is second in goals-against-average (.722) and total saves (42).
 
• As a team, Utah State leads the MW in total shots (127), corner kicks (46), total assists (16) and save percentage (.857).
 
Series Against Nevada
USU is 13-7-0 all-time against Nevada, including a perfect 8-0 record at home. In the last meeting in Logan, Utah State posted a 1-0 victory over the Wolf Pack as Ashley Cardozo recorded the game winner from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
 
Series Against UNLV
The Aggies are 4-10-0 all-time against UNLV, including a 3-4-0 record on the road. In the teams' last meeting in Las Vegas, Utah State captured a 1-0 double-overtime victory in 2019. Cardozo picked up the assist on the game winner in the 107th minute.
 
Beehive State Connections
Although playing in the Silver State, both Nevada and UNLV have players with ties to the state of Utah. Wolf Pack senior Casey Crawford graduated from Park City HS, while Rebels Kennedi Schmidt and Moriah Lucas call Lehi and Lindon home.
 
She's Going the Distance
Sophomore defender Kelsey Steed-Kaufusi and junior keeper Diera Walton are the only two Aggies on the roster to play in every minute of every contest this season.
